Beautiful.

Great music is like a mirror for the soul. It reflects, it resonates, it reveals. I recall exactly where I was when i first heard this. Years later, the late great Johnny Cash covered it and again, for different reasons - the same music hit like a sledge hammer. Again, a reflection but altered through the lense of time. Its still painfully beautiful. And still, strangely... Beautifully painful.

Such a killer song. Had just gotten back from Costa Rica from my Honeymoon (2008 or 9) & a buddy had a free ticket 🎫 to see NIN in Vancouver & I’m pretty sure it’s the ‘Find My Way’ Vancouver video that I frikkin’ missed! Only band I still need to see. And my wife saw NIN & Marilyn Manson @ the PNE Forum in 1994 in Vancouver & that’s one show I should’ve been at! I was too busy dancing 🕺 at the Raves back then…

Trent Reznor will always be the godfather of those animal instincts that make us undeniably human=]. His poetics and performativity always serve as a reminder that we have all been passive students of what has been fed to each of us through those comforting feeding tubes that sustain our daily media diet and remind us to “question everything “ & to "think different". I personally think that we are more than the "vegetables" that consume what is neatly packaged for our information diets. Thank goodness that I grew up with those Gods of rock and folk music like Peter Townsend, Elliott Smith, Trent Reznor, & Leonard Cohen and the counterculture that instilled in me the values of questioning the "Manufactured Consent" that the general population lives with and to embrace all of those dark buried truths that Jung reminds us are equally important to our daily self realization- I think "Buridan's Ass" & "The Prisoner's Dilemma" have been some of the most referenced dichotomies in epistemology, ethics, politics, and the science of behavioral finance- it tended to drive people like John Nash and Amartya Sen to the brink of the edge of reason & reality. I have always believed that "hurt people-hurt people".

I would say that Cash's version is an example of someone doing a cover that was SLIGHTLY better than the original. But hearing Trent do a version like this makes me question that.
